About Us

At Axle Energy, we’re building the infrastructure that will underpin the decarbonised energy system. Our software moves energy usage to times when electricity is cheap and green, by controlling vehicle charging, heating systems, inverters and home batteries. We control hundreds of thousands of energy assets.

We’re building in a legacy industry and moving gigawatt-hours of electrons in the real world, but we operate at lightning speed, and we’re growing the team to meet customer demand.

We’re proud to be supported by world-leading investors, including Energize Capital and Accel. Read more about what we’re building here.

France is one of the most important flexibility markets in Europe. This role is critical to accelerating Axle’s growth in France.

About the role

Axle has quickly become the leader in our operational markets, and we’re now looking to expand our reach in France.

At the core of our market expansion plans is market analysis. To maximise future revenue, we spend a lot of time understanding the value of flexibility in power markets around the world.

We are looking for a technical individual (data scientist, analyst or engineer) with strong knowledge of the French electricity markets and an instinct for commercial value.

You will become Axle’s internal expert on French power markets: understanding the market rules, modelling the value, and building relationships with system operators and regulators. We’re scrappy about method and rigorous about conclusions.

You will speak fluent French and English. Other European languages will also be an asset.

What you will be doing

  • Developing a deep understanding of French energy markets and grid dynamics to understand how trading, compensation, penalties and cash flow work

  • Jumping on the phone with grid operators, regulators and market stakeholders to validate hypotheses and make sense of data

  • Building and optimising models of wholesale/NEBCO, capacity, balancing, ancillary services and local flexibility markets in France to forecast what different assets can earn

  • Sizing the revenue opportunity across markets and products to shape where we expand next

  • Building and evaluating different strategies for cycling a battery or load-shifting an EV charger

  • Monitoring and shaping energy regulation to accelerate the growth of flexibility.

This is an opportunity to gain unique domain expertise and build the quantitative case for first-of-a-kind projects across the world.

What we think you need to be successful

  • Deep quantitative and modelling ability (Python, SQL)

  • Exceptional communication and the ability to turn data into actionable commercial insights

  • Comfort moving fast and making decisions in an evolving environment

  • Deep knowledge of French electricity markets (NEBCO, Mécanisme de Capacité, Mécanisme d’Ajustement, ancillary services…)

  • Relationships with regulators, grid operators and other stakeholders (CRE, DGEC, RTE, Enedis, etc.) are a plus

What’s in it for you

This is a 12 month fixed-term contract (CDD). Compensation is highly competitive and dependent on experience.

We operate with a deliberately flat structure and aim to keep pay equitable across the company, with a 1:1 median ratio between founder and team compensation.

Bi-annual retreats to strengthen team connection & shared purpose.

You’ll be based in France. To maximise collaboration, we ask that you spend ~1 week per month working from our London office.

The opportunity to directly shape the future of energy markets and accelerate the transition to a low-carbon world.

We are extremely keen to build a diverse team, and we’re particularly eager to hear from candidates who don't fit the traditional role stereotypes. If you’re motivated by our mission, please do reach out, even if you feel you might not ‘check all the boxes’.

Interview process

  1. Initial interview

  2. Take-home exercise

  3. Final interview (in-person)

  4. Offer, references, and welcome to the team!
