About the role
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Indirect Tax Manager to be responsible for all aspects of Indirect Tax (VAT/GST/Sales Tax) compliance and advisory across the Octopus Energy Group. This newly created role will be crucial in managing risk and ensuring efficiency in our rapidly growing international operations. You will report into the Group Head of Tax and be part of the Group tax team. You will have one direct report- the tax assistant manager. The tax team looks after all taxes across the group and while the role is focussed on indirect tax there will be opportunities for exposure to other taxes. The group is highly acquisitive so there is huge potential for the role to develop in the very near future.
What you'll do
Advisory and Planning
Provide expert indirect tax advice and support to various business functions (e.g.,Finance, Legal, Operations, and Technology) on new products, services, andexpansion into new markets
Identify opportunities for indirect tax savings and efficiencies
Lead indirect tax due diligence for M&A activities
Assist in setting up the correct indirect tax processes for new international entities
Compliance and Reporting
Manage all VAT compliance obligations for the UK entities, including overseeingthe timely and accurate preparation and submission of returns. The returns will beprepared by the tax assistant manager
Provide support where necessary to the non-UK entities
Ensure the Group's accounting systems and processes correctly capture andreport indirect tax data.
Coordinate with external advisors and internal finance teams to gather necessarydata for tax filings.
Monitor changes in indirect tax legislation across relevant jurisdictions andimplement necessary changes to internal processes and systems.
Advise on other indirect taxes as required eg customs duty and climate changelevy
Identify efficiencies and improve processes and systems to ensure we are keepingup with requirements
What you'll need
A recognised professional accounting or tax qualification (e.g. CTA, ACA, ACCA, CPA or LLM in Taxation)
Strong post qualification experience in indirect tax, ideally gained in-house within a multinational business or at a major accounting firm
Proven technical knowledge of VAT/GST/Sales Tax regimes, particularly across multiple jurisdictions.
Experience working within the energy or utilities sector would be a bonus.
Experience with NetSuite and/or tax automation tools would be helpful.
Great written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex tax topics clearly and confidently to people outside of tax.
Comfortable working autonomously, managing multiple priorities and taking ownership of projects through to completion.
